Competing in the job market is now a serious and daunting prospect. With more people going to college, it means more people are fighting for the same jobs.  It has therefore become imperative that you have something that allows you to stand out from the crowd – and with there being 500,000 people having work experience, those who can’t boast of the same are in danger of being left behind.

Get to Try Things Out

One of the great things about being a working student is that it allows you to trial things out. You get to see if you are good enough for the industry and if the industry is a good fit for you.

By working for a company, you will be able to see what they believe in ethically and what it is like working in that type of environment.

Stand Out to Potential Employers

As mentioned earlier, in this day and age, there can be literally hundreds if not thousands of other people applying for the same job. And because you’re fresh out of college, these jobs will be entry level and the people applying together with you won’t have any experience under their belts.

Therefore, by having earned some prior work experience, you get to stand out from the pack. You get to show your potential employers that you have the inner drive to go out and improve your career prospects. This is something that is massively helpful in any industry.

Personal Development

By getting work experience, you not only improve professionally, you also improve on a personal level. You will discover that along the way, you improve your social skills in the workplace. For example, if you work in a sales environment you will likely become more outspoken and confident. As a result, exposing yourself early to the workplace improves and develops you on different levels.

You Can Work Abroad

This is often something which isn’t thought about when students think about work experience, but one of the great things about it is that you can actually use it as an opportunity to travel around the world. This gives you a chance to learn about different cultures and widen your perspective of the world.

Also, in a large number of competitive industries, it is important that you have international experience and countries such as the UK – where it is not too difficult to get a temporary UK Visa. Not only do you gain new experiences, but you also improve your career prospects.
