One of the best features of the iPhone is the ability to change ringtones, create your own ringtones and even assign a different ringtone to each person in your contact list. The default ringtone can get boring after a while, and you may even find yourself reaching for your iPhone when someone else’s rings with the same ringtone. All you need to change the ringtone in your iPhone is a little knowledge how to navigate the phone’s settings. To add your own ringtones, all you need is an Internet connection and iTunes account.

Picking From Available Ringtones

This part of changing the ringtone is the simplest and takes only a minute. Tap the “Settings” icon and navigate to “Sounds” before selecting “Ringtones.” Tap the built-in ringtone you want in order to select it. You can also preview each built-in iPhone ringtone before activating it.

Adding Your Own Ringtone

The simplest way to add a new ringtone by purchasing it from the iTunes store right from your iPhone. If it’s more convenient at the moment, you can also purchase a new ringtone from your iTunes account on your desktop or laptop before syncing it to your iPhone. You can also follow these steps to create your own ringtone out of one of your favorite songs in your iTunes library.

Step One: Select the Track

Once you’ve picked the .mp3 file you want to use for your ringtone, right-click on it and select “Get Info.” Then select “Get AAC version” and drag the resulting .m4a file to your desktop. Select the start and stop points you want for this track. Press the F2 key and change the file extension to .m4r so your iPhone will recognize it as a ringtone.

Step Two: Add the File to Your Ringtones Library

Delete the old copy of the song from your iTunes library before dragging your ringtone into the Ringtones section of iTunes. Plug in your iPhone and sync your ringtones. Your new ringtone will appear in the “Sounds” section of the “Settings” iPhone app.

Step Three: Select Your Ringtone

Use the same steps for changing the ringtone under “Settings,” and your custom ringtone should be included in the list of available ones. If you want to do so, you can also assign your new ringtone to a specific person in your contact list.
