Also known as SNAP benefits, food stamps can help your household to pay for essential groceries, and you may qualify depending on your medical expenses, household size and income. If you are looking for information about how to apply for Texas food stamps, begin at one of the offices maintained by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Where to Apply

You have the option to apply online or download and complete an application to send via snail mail. If you do not have access to a computer, contact your local commission office to request that an application be mailed to you. To apply online, create an account under the “Your Texas Benefits” section of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s website, and after you are registered and logged in, you can click on the “apply for benefits” link.

When you begin to fill in your information, make sure to include your full name, Social Security number, current address and birth date. Provide information about every other individual in your household including his or her relation to you, their Social Security numbers and their genders. In the second section, indicate whether you have transportation to sit for an interview at a Texas Health and Human Services Commission office. You may also request a telephone interview if you are unable to meet in person. Answer the necessary questions about your expenses and medical coverage, including utility bills, rent, income, assets and other benefits. Double-check the application to ensure that it is signed and dated.

Required Documents

After you fill out the application, you must send a photocopy of your valid driver’s license or Public Safety ID card as well as photocopies of Social Security cards for every member living in your household. Registered aliens are required to send a copy of their alien registration card. All applicants must submit proof of income from all sources, including child support obligations, expenses and other benefits. You may also be asked to send copies of your bank account statements, annuities, bonds, trusts or stocks, if they apply to your financial situation. Also provide a copy of your medical record if you or someone in your household is currently pregnant.

Keep in mind that the application process for food stamps in Texas may take a while, so if you have need for immediate assistance, you may be entitled to apply for emergency benefits, or expedited SNAP benefits. Qualifying individuals receive a monthly income of less than $150 and have $100 or less in current resources.
