how does blood flow through the heart

People usually assume that the brain is the most important organ in the body, but they fail to realize that the heart plays a role in everything. Nothing in your body can function properly without a fully and healthily functioning heart.

Your heart supplies blood all over your body, and that blood contains oxygen and the necessary nutrients your body’s cells need to thrive. If the heart fails, so does the whole blood circulation system, which affects every single cell of your body.

A healthy heart is crucial for your energy, vitality, stamina, metabolism, digestion, and brain. Sadly, as we age, our hearts become weaker, and our blood circulatory systems slowly collapse.

While it’s true that so far, we haven’t been able to stop aging, the good news is that there are some ways in which we can at least slow it down. One of the most promising ways of slowing aging is making sure your heart is healthy, and that’s what we’d like to talk about.

How Does Blood Flow Through the Heart: What is the Role of the Heart?

The role of the heart, as depicted in literature for thousands of years, is not medically accurate. However, the extreme emphasis on its importance is not exaggerated. Your heart is the reason why you are alive.

If you have a healthy heart, blood will rush throughout your body, making sure that every single one of your cells thrives. With a healthy heart comes energy, vitality, stamina, strength, general physical health, and general mental health.

It’s your heart that makes sure your body receives the oxygen that it needs to live. It’s your heart that keeps your immune system working, thereby enabling you to fight diseases.

Your heart is the reason why your skin glows, and your hair remains shiny and strong. The heart is also the reason why your body can get rid of the toxins that may infect and kill it. Even your bones depend on your heart for the calcium that they need to stay strong.

The Basic Structure of the Heart

The human heart consists of two types of chambers, known as atria and ventricles. There are a total of four chambers in the heart, two atria, and two ventricles. The atria are the upper chambers of the heart, while the ventricles are the lower chambers. These chambers pump blood in their ways.

These two types of chambers are separated by gates or valves that prevent the mixing of oxygen-rich blood and oxygen-poor blood and make sure that the blood flows in the right direction.

These chambers contain four valves, namely:

  • Aortic Valve
  • Mitral Valve (The mitral valve is also known as the bicuspid valve)
  • Pulmonary Valve
  • Tricuspid Valve

What is the Circulatory System?

The human circulatory system is a complex system or network of blood vessels through which the blood flows throughout the body. Some of the blood vessels are large, while others are small. Based on their structure and function, blood vessels are divided into three major types:

Arteries

The arteries are the blood vessels in the circulation system that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart and distribute it throughout the body. The blood that they hold is rich in oxygen.

Here are some of the major types of arteries:

  • The circumflex artery
  • The left anterior descending artery
  • The right coronary
  • The marginal arteries
  • The posterior descending artery

Veins

The veins are blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood from tissues and cells to the heart. Here are the main types of veins:

  • Pulmonary Veins
  • Systemic Veins
  • Superficial Veins
  • Deep Veins

Capillaries

The capillaries are small and thin blood vessels that help the veins and arteries connect. Here are the main types of capillaries:

  • Continuous Capillaries
  • Fenestrated Capillaries
  • Sinusoidal Capillaries

How Does Blood Flow Through the Heart? A Step-by-Step Explanation

As we already discussed, the heart is divided into a total of four chambers. The way the human heart works is that it keeps oxygen-rich blood and oxygen-poor blood in separate chambers and doesn’t allow them to mix.

Here is how blood flows through the heart.

Step 1

Deoxygenated blood leaves the tissues and organs and enters the right atrium of the heart. It passes through two major veins known as superior vena cava and inferior vena cava.

Step 2

Once the deoxygenated blood is in the right atrium, the tricuspid valve opens and allows it to fall into the right ventricle.

Step 3

When the blood enters the right ventricle, the right ventricle contracts, which closes the tricuspid valve and opens the pulmonary valve.

Step 4

Once the pulmonary valve is fully open, the blood flows through the pulmonary artery all the way to the lungs, where it catches the oxygen and becomes oxygenated blood.

Step 5

Once the blood becomes fully oxygenated in the lungs, the pulmonary veins carry it from there to the left atrium of the heart.

Step 6

At this stage mitral valve opens, and the blood flows from the left atrium to the left ventricle.

Stage 7

The left ventricle contracts, which results in the closing of the mitral valve and the opening of the aortic valve.

Stage 8

At this stage, blood flows through the aortic valve into the aorta, from where it distributes throughout the body. Once it reaches the tissues, it becomes deoxygenated again and comes back to the pulmonary veins, from where the cycle starts again.

Major Conditions that Affect the Heart’s Blood Flow

The heart is undoubtedly the most important organ in the human body, but it’s not particularly the strongest one. Here are the main conditions that can affect the heart’s health and disrupt blood flow through the heart and throughout the body:

Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is a condition in which the heartbeat becomes irregular. In some cases, the heart may beat faster than normal, while in others, it may be beating slowly than normal.

Congestive Heart Failure

It is a condition in which the muscles of the heart become damaged or weak. When the cardiac muscles are weak are damaged, they are unable to maintain a healthy blood flow in the body.

Coronary Artery Disease

The arteries are stronger than the veins but are still very flexible. In coronary artery disease, they become harder and inflexible, thereby unable to carry blood effectively to the heart.

Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack

It is a condition when blood is unable to reach the heart due to arterial blockage.
