You turn on the TV and you are bombarded with images and stories of disaster and tragedy from around the world, you are getting 100 emails a day, your finances need attention and you still haven’t fixed the leak in your bathroom.

With modern life pulling us in so many different directions, coupled with a connection to so many people across so many platforms it is becoming increasingly challenging to keep our mental faculties working at their absolute best. With that in mind, it is essential that we give our brain a fighting chance.

If you had a beautiful Lamborghini, would you drive it for hundreds of miles before it finally died on you? Of course you wouldn’t, you would refuel it, check the oil and respond to any warning signs. Your brain is the same.

If you let years pass without changing the oil, the tyres and other essential parts of your Lamborghini its performance would drop significantly or completely. The human brain is the most magical machine in the Universe, far more impressive than any sports car.

Here are five easy ways to improve your mental clarity by treating your brain like the precision tool that it is:

1-Notice Beautiful things

This isn’t a cliché as we are all different. Beauty to some people may be the sweeping lines of a Ferrari, for others a giggling toddler. Take the time to notice and enjoy whatever you find beautiful. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gorgeous rose bush or a well hit golf shot, stopping to appreciate something gives the brain a valuable opportunity to change gear.

2-Sleep

Sleep deprivation is one of the most effective methods of torture. Going without sleep can quite literally drive you crazy. Whilst you sleep your subconscious mind solves problems ready for the next day. Your memories are organized and learning is processed during sleep. You will simply find it impossible to think with any clarity if you do not get enough sleep.

3-Get Spiritual

You may not be religiously inclined in any way shape or form. However, this doesn’t mean you cannot be spiritual. Opening your mind beyond physical appearances and things that you can see with your eyes will allow your brain to operate at a unique frequency. You may just simply recognise the idea of some sort of higher power or consider some invisible forces that may be at work.

4-Have a Morning Ritual

Developing a positive, empowering morning ritual for myself is one of the best things that I have ever done. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning you can have a pre-designed list of things that you do before you begin your day. These should be habits that feed, exercise and nourish your mind and body. From deep breathing, to affirmations to reading, a well thought out morning ritual will allow you to achieve mental clarity at the start of the day and keep it going all day.

5-Don’t be Afraid to ‘Switch Off’

Sometimes you need to take the shackles off your brain and allow it go where it wants to go. This could happen by browsing Youtube or watching repeats of your favourite comedy show. By doing this every day you will creating a sense of calmness in your brain that allows it to function clearly at optimal levels when you get back to pursuing your goals.

You can prevent your brain from running on empty by practicing these 5 techniques in your daily life. Giving yourself this mental fuel will allow you to think with clarity, improving the quality of your life and your chances of success.
