How To Refill Canon Ink Cartridges

Most Canon printers use individual ink cartridges for the black ink as well as several colors. The cartridges have a tiny microchip in them that will require resetting once filled, so you will likely need to purchase a chip-reset device from a reputable online or brick-and-mortar office store. Keep in mind that refilling Canon ink cartridges can be messy, so you might want to put rags or newspapers on the floor to avoid ruining your workspace with ink. You can purchase an ink refill kit online, at a nearby supply store or directly from the manufacturer.

1. Take out the empty cartridge and remove the label so that the round plastic stopper is exposed. This is where you will inject the new ink.

2. Use rubber bands to secure the orange plastic cartridge cap that is located on the bottom of the cartridge. This plastic cap came with the printer when you purchased it, but if you have thrown it away or lost it, cut a piece of cardboard and use that instead. The purpose of the cap is to keep ink from leaking out the bottom of the cartridge while you refill it.

3. Find the small hole in the plastic stopper located at the top of the cartridge. Using the enlarging tool that came with your kit make the hole slightly bigger. If you do not have this tool, simply take a small screw and heat it with a lighter before placing it into the stopper. Once it is snug in place, use a pair of pliers to pull the screw out; the stopper should come right out with it.

4. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for filling the provided syringe with ink. Depending on the type of kit you purchased, you might have noticed a pre-filled syringe was provided for you.

5. Place the refill syringe into the enlarged hole that you either stretched or created, and push the top of the syringe down to inject the ink into the cartridge.

6. Remove the plastic from the bottom of the cartridge. The ink will drip off of the tip of the cartridge, so make sure that you have something to catch the ink or that you are completing this step over newspaper or old rags.

7. Use the plastic end of a syringe plunger to replace the plastic stopper if you removed it in an earlier step. Take the plunger from the syringe and place the small plastic end into the hole situated at the top of the ink cartridge. Making sure that the plastic stays in the hole, slowly pull the plunger from the small plastic end.

8. Put the cartridge into the chip reset device and wait for it to beep or flash, depending on the model of you device. The cartridge is now prepped, filled and ready for insertion into your printer.
