However, recent bouts of acne have prompted me to reassess its compatibility with my skin due to certain ingredients. A friend who spends all day in the sun recommended I try Dermasport’s SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen. I’d never heard of the brand before but it appears to be very popular with swimmers and lifeguards because it contains only zinc oxide, making it reef-safe at a much more affordable price point.
I started using EltaMD after my dermatologist recommended it. At the time, I could only purchase it through her office, which made me think it was worth the price. Its broad-spectrum protection and lightweight texture have made it my go-to daily sunscreen. However recently, my skin started to break out whenever I used the EltaMD sunscreen (I have very sensitive skin) which made me want to look for a gentler alternative without compromising on sun protection.
Making the switch to Dermasport has been amazing for my skin. Not only does Dermasport offer slightly better sun protection (SPF 50 vs. EltaMD’s SPF 46), but its ingredient has led to fewer breakouts and happier skin overall. I also like how Dermasport is a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t need to be absorbed into the skin like the chemical blockers in EltaMD’s UV clear.
I think both EltaMD and Dermasport are great sunscreens. However, I must say that Dermasport's commitment to cleaner ingredients that are reef-safe and better value has made it my new go-to sunscreen. My skin hasn’t had nearly as many breakouts since I made the switch to Dermasport.
