It's Sunday night and I am watching the football game (US football) perusing through my RSS feeds. One of those feeds tells me what is on the ever changing del.icio.us popular page and tonight I found something pretty interesting. In fact, I could see using this all the time.
It took me to a site named Feed Crier. They essentially allow you to receive RSS Feeds via Instant Messenger instead of via email or feed reader. Think about this for a second, they will alert you when your favorite feeds are updated. This is much more convenient than constantly having to login to some site just to get an update on your favorite sites.
This is what I will call 'proactive updating' and it will require some filtering on your part. For instance, I read 167 feeds each day. There is no way I can or want to get an IM every time one of those sites publishes new content. However, I would want to know when my 5-10 favorites do.
Today Feed Crier supports AIM, MSN, Google Talk and Jabber. If you have a fetish for some getting updated immediately, check out Feed Crier.
