When purchasing a new or used car, crash ratings are often overlooked. Many people, me included, make decisions solely based on what we can afford. I know that I tend to get so caught up in not being swindled that I overlook items like this.
Consumer Report has a pretty nice way to actually watch a crash test of the vehicle you're interested in. I wouldn't try to search for a 1989 Camaro, but nevertheless, many of the newer models are shown. Not only do you get to see the exterior impact and subsequent damage, you get to see how the crash test dummy fares (shown below).
