Good ole Penelope Trunk comes through today with a few very simple reminders on how to stay on time. I personally don't have a problem with punctuality but everyone else in my family does. I've had to go as far as setting the clocks in the house and cars 10 minutes fast just to get my wife to be on time.
From Penelope's article:
"Here’s a great thing to say: “Excuse me, I hate to cut you off, but I have an appointment.” It is hard to cut someone off, but they will respect you for sticking to a schedule. The higher up you go in corporate life, the stricter the people stick to a schedule. The good news is that this means it’s perfectly acceptable in work life to say this short speech. Get comfortable doing it at work and then you can do it at home, too. Often saying no takes forethought and practice."
Clearly the cutting someone off part is a little tongue-in-cheek remark to get the point across. The angle is that you can learn to cut yourself off from a conversation as opposed to being late for an appointment. To her point, in business being late is a major no-no.
