Ultimate Guide To Buying Tax Software

I lost patience with DIY tax filing a long time ago. Between my wife and I arguing about the value of charitable donations and the headache of battling procrastination, I just couldn't handle it. We found a good accountant and never looked back. In fact, I will plug them before getting to the meat of this post. If you are in Illinois and need an accountant, here is who I use.

For those that have simple taxes or have otherwise made the choice to do it yourself, a good tax software is something you will be shopping for soon. This morning, a finance blog I frequent posted what I am officially calling, The Ultimate Buying to Tax Software.

What I didn’t realize was that all the companies I reviewed, including the big ones (TurboTax and TaxCut) would have some strange incompetency to communicate features and benefits in a clear, concise manner. I spent hours trolling and searching deep through these sites looking for clarification on such basic things as pricing and major benefits. Even information such as which products include state tax preparation in addition to federal was hard to find. Well, I’m happy to say I’m done with my research and can now share the fruits.

He compares varying versions of the following:
  • TurboTax (Intuit)
  • TaxCut (H&R Block)
  • TaxBrain.com
  • CompleteTax
  • EZTaxRefunds.com
  • TaxActOnline.com
