I ran into Phonezoo last night and I spent entirely too much time on their site. I have never, ever been much a ringtone guy but with the site being free, I had to give it a whirl.
After completing a 10 second form indicating what type of cell phone and service you have, you will receive a text message to verify that you made the right selections.
Once that's done, you're ready to go and you have a few options:
- Browse their public ringtone library and grab whatever you want. Your selections are sent to your phone and also stored on your profile page which you can share with your friends.
- Create your own ringtones. Take your favorite song and upload it to their site. You can then select the portion of the song that you'd like your ringtone to consist of. Again, you can share your piece of art with the world or simply with a group of friends.
- Sample copywrited ringtones. For good reason, they will not let you simply download the copywrited ringtones. You can however listen to get some ideas. In order to actually get that content onto your phone, you will have to upload your own version of the song and create the ringtone yourself. This at least proves that you purchased or have the song in your possession. They are trying to keep their site as legit as possible and this is a decent way to police things and keep them out of trouble.
Although they are in beta mode I have to say that I was extremely pleased because everything worked perfectly and frankly because it was free. As their membership and library grows and assuming they scale the service correctly, Phonezoo will become a top destination for anyone wanting to completely customize their ringtones.
