Back in my eBay days, shipping was always a killer. It costs a lot and when you pass the cost onto the bidders and buyers, they complain if they believe you are charging too much.
There is no real cure for this but Red Roller is a free site that can help reduce your shipping costs. They are pretty integrated with Ebay but if you just want to send Aunt Betty a package you can certainly do that too.
In short, you enter your package dimensions and destination. Red Roller then compares the prices of DHL, USPS, FedEx, etc and tells you which shipper can get there for the lowest cost. You then complete the entire transaction through their site including the label printing. Pretty convenient.
